A landmark 2015 study published in Aging Cell showed that CoQ10 supplementation in aged mice restored oocyte mitochondrial function, reduced chromosomal abnormalities, and improved fertility outcomes, findings consistent with the mitochondrial decline theory of egg quality loss. In human studies, a 2018 randomised controlled trial of 169 women found that those under 35 with diminished ovarian reserve who took 600 mg of CoQ10 daily for 60 days before IVF had significantly more retrieved oocytes, a higher fertilisation rate, and more high-quality embryos compared to controls. The numbers from a 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis are striking: CoQ10 supplementation in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology was linked to higher clinical pregnancy rates (28.8% vs 14.1%) compared to placebo or no treatment.
