As it turned out, I discovered this is an actual symbol, and not just something I made up! It is in fact a Unalome. It comes from Buddhism and is symbolic of the path to enlightenment. The spirals represent the beginning of consciousness, while the twists and turns stand for the different experiences that a person incurs on their way to reaching enlightenment. The lotus flower
