so in certain positions (not all)  it leans a bit one way

but I have never seen another set like this: inside the walls of each of the boxes are what I'd guess are tiny metal balls

Feels more early than mid 20th century to me. No maker's mark and I can't find another out there like it. 2 1 2" d x 1 3 16" t and in very nice old vintage antique condition.
